If the universe continues expanding and reaches a state of maximum entropy, usable energy could eventually become increasingly scarce. Stars would stop forming, existing stars would fade, and the cosmos would become colder, darker, and increasingly inactive.
This hypothetical future is often called the heat death of the universe.
And that leads to a strangely philosophical conclusion:
If the ultimate destination of the universe is one of near-total cosmic darkness and inactivity, perhaps the journey matters more than the destination.
The universe may have an unimaginably long future—but we are here during a remarkably interesting chapter of its story. 🌌
